John Simpson Kirkpatrick Remembered
He was born 1892 at Tyne Dock, South Shields and served with the Australians at Gallipoli; where he used several donkeys to ferry wounded men to safety. On 19th May, 1915 'The Man with the Donkey' was killed and became an ANZAC legend. Most of the historic information (and some of the photos) come from a new book, JOHN SIMPSON KIRKPATRICK - The Untold Story of the Gallipoli Hero's Early Life. The final chapter, jumps forward in time, to explain how he has been 'remembered' by local people.
