Hunger and desperation had a radicalising effect on some during the Depression. In 1933 Noel Counihan, a young artist in Brunswick Vic, defied police by speaking from a locked cage on a cart chained to a balustrade. Counihan (1913-1986) was a painter, cartoonist and illustrator noted for his socialist-realist style and radical outlook. Years later, the Free Speech memorial was built on the spot to commemorate the free speech fights by workers and the unemployed Northern Star 23 May 1933…

During the Depression, there was great concern about the rise of both Communism and Fascism. Banner, by Australian artist Noel Counihan, depicting anti-Fascist sentiments used in a May Day rally in Lygon Street Carlton near the Victorian Trades Hall Council.. The banner was commissioned by Casa d'Italia, an anti-Fascist organisation created by Italians in Melbourne in 1938.
