Dr Mandawuy Yunupingu 1956 - 2013 Australian of the Year 1992 for his role in ‘building bridges of understanding between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

Mandawuy Yunupingu (1956-2012) was an Australian Aboriginal musician, songwriter and campaigner who fought many battles - most of which he won. As the frontman of Yothu Yindi, he pushed indigenous music beyond Australian borders and gained a global audience with his 1992 hit Treaty. He was also Australia's first indigenous school principal. His surname, Yunupingu, translates as "rock that will stand against anything".

Aboriginal Educator, Musician & Ambassador Dr Mandawuy Yunupingu - born in Arnhem Land, was the first aboriginal in the NT to gain a Bachelor of Education & subsequently became the first Indigenous Australian to be appointed a school principal. He developed a progressive curriculum that incorporated both Western & Aboriginal knowledge traditions.
