Here’s an amazing fact! Scientists estimate that 50-80% of the oxygen production on Earth comes from the ocean. 🌊 Most of it comes from tiny ocean plants – called phytoplankton – that live near the ocean surface and drift with the currents. Like all plants, they use sunlight and carbon dioxide for life and release lots of oxygen! They may be too tiny to see, but phytoplankton are one of the most important organisms we need for the ocean and our planet to survive. Aren’t our oceans amazing! 💙

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has recently announced up to $45 million in funding to the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics research through to 2030. The University of New South Wales School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering and other research groups will receive funding. They are aiming to develop solar PV technology so solar panels can have increased performance and cost less to make. Did you have those fluorescent ‘glow in the dark’ stars on your bedroom ceiling when you were a kid? Well, a few years ago, Transport for NSW used an innovative product to make a ‘glow in the dark’ bike path in Gosford. It's made with a natural non-toxic ‘glow in the dark’ mineral, and absorbs UV light from the sun during the day and then emits a soft glow at night. ⭐ (BTW, the pic is not of a path - just some nice luminescence.) Any brand of used surf wetsuits can now be recycled through Rip Curl stores in Australia. Rip Curl sponsors this national recycling program, making it free for everyone to participate. 😊 Once collected, the wetsuits will be picked up by TerraCycle who take them to a recycling facility and then crumbs the rubber - turning them into creative things like soft fall matting for playgrounds. ♻ To see where Rip Curl stores are around Australia, simply look up their website. Researchers in Townsville are researching ways to use probiotics to improve the health of coral.⁠ ⁠They are working on growing large numbers of more heat-resistant coral in aquaculture. But they are also looking for a solution to keep the baby coral healthy so they can be transferred into the ocean and onto bleached reefs. 🌊⁠ The researchers have found that, like people, certain types of probiotics can improve the health of the little coral.⁠ Great to see Australians keeping our reef safe. 💛⁠ Numbers, Survival, Eco Friendly, Coral

Did you know that whales are fantastic sequesters of carbon – after they eat, their poop is a sort of fertiliser for micro plankton in the water. Imagine if your couch or curtains could be absorbing energy from natural light – which is then used to charge devices in your home.⁠ ⁠ Yes... it's happening now! This looks like an exciting discovery! As you may know, lithium-ion batteries are relatively energy-dense, quite heavy, large and bulky. Researchers from Monash University have discovered, by accident, that there is a chemical phase of sulphur that basically stops battery degradation. They are expecting that this discovery will lead to new lithium-sulphur batteries that weigh a third of the equivalent current lithium-ion batteries - with a lifespan that’s twice as long! 😊💚 Exciting stuff! Wondering what to do with your bread bags, frozen vegie packs, and other 'soft & scrunchy' plastics?⁠ These symbols on your plastics (in Australia) mean they can be returned to your supermarket to be recycled. ⁠♻ It's easy to get started at home – by using an empty bread bag or other soft plastic bag - and scrunching the other empty packs into that. Dig in for International Compost Awareness Week! This year’s theme is a 'Recipe for Regeneration'. Did you know that Aussies are wasting about 1/3 of our food in Australia? Too much of that is going to landfill, when it could be making magic in our gardens! Remember, if you can’t compost where you live, try sharing food scraps with a local community garden. Or check online for local groups that are in your area, who are happy to accept extra food scraps for composting. Sharing is caring. 🤎😊 Aussies, Composting

In good news for Qld, and Australia, a new Pumped Storage Hydro project has been started and it will be pumping it's water at a disused gold mine in far north Queensland. And it will employ 800 people during construction. When finished, the system will have the potential to supply up to 250MW of rapid response, flexible power to Australia’s National Electricity Market for up to 8 hours. ⚡ That's enough power to generate electricity to power 143,000 homes for eight hours. Did you know that coral has a special smell of its own? According to one researcher, coral smells mild and briny, with a light hint of oyster scent! 🌊 Researchers from the University of Technology Sydney have discovered that the smell of coral on the Great Barrier Reef is made up of 87 volatile gasses. Both fish and coral larvae have been observed navigating away from degraded reefs (often overrun with rotting seaweed) and going towards healthy ecosystems. And that's why it’s so important to make sure your plastics are recycled correctly. Electric vehicle owners won’t be feeling guilty when they order extra hot chips at the remote West Australian Caiguna Roadhouse.⁠ A crowdfunded EV fast charger is being installed at the Roadhouse - to fill in the 720 kilometre wide gap on the Nullabor Plain between the WA and SA charging networks.⁠ And the new fast charger will be run on used chip fryer oil – that used to be dumped at the local tip! Together, the solar & wind farms - as well as rooftop (PV) solar systems - supplied an average of 101% of local demand every day for a period of 6.5 days. This may also be a world record.
