A game of basketball (later known as netball). Photograph shows a game in progress with the ball about to go into the basket (goal). In the background are spectators and unidentified school buildings. Taken by William A Price circa 1910. National Library of New Zealand

This 1910 photograph shows why the game was originally called basketball – the goal is a large basket mounted on a pole. The schoolgirls playing are not encumbered by long skirts, but are still wearing heavy clothing for such a vigorous sport.
