Terrace gardening, Permaculture and Aquaponics

I and my brother are creating an urban oasis, employing all the innovative techniques of coltivation and of rearing of aquatic animals, such as fish and turtle. The fifth-floor terrace, where we're realising it, obliges us to face many disadvantages linked with the peculiar exposure to sun and strong wind. Furthermore, the flooring is one of the worst, because our apartment's owner paved it with not walkable fake slate slabs, that are subject to overheating during the summer sunny days.

Wicking bed, realised starting form a real wooden bed, with two long and thin pipes on both sides under the earth, multed with the expanded clay, The pipes are riddled by tiny holes, close to each other on the upside and just four at a long distance between each other to drain out the water. The water poured into this systems comes from fish. This innovative technique reduces the loss of water for evaporation, exploiting a major capacity of retaining humidity inside the growbed.

In order to create shadows and so protect animals and plants from the the exagerate heat, we installed a pair of old sails, that we had found in garage, that we had tied to the walls through elastic rops, in way of resisting to the strongest gust of wind - that are really frequent here, being rightly in front of the sea - even if the Adriatic one.

Because of the high exposure to the sun of our terrace, the Mediterranean maquis trees represent the best choice of cultivation.

This is a small box where yesterday we planted mint, that needs to be alone, because its roots are really invasive and swiftly grow and risk to suffocate those ones of another plant.

Beside the flowers, we sowed catnip - both for the joy of our cats ;) - but most of all, because we're trying to thermically isolate the terrace floor that works also as ceiling of our dining room, in order to reduce the need of artificial heating (in winter) and cooling (in summer).

The plastic tanks had been covered with the mulching sheet, three days ago, to avoid the formation of algae inside them, caused by the direct exposure to the sunlight.

Two home-made mini aquaponic systems, that respectively hosts a Scripta Scripta turtle, while in the left one there are four goldfish that come from the my father's firm aquaponic plant. In front of them, we realised, with a sort of mulching sheet and waste pieces of wood, a grow box where we sowed wild species of flowers and that we irrigate with the water of the turtle's tank.
