Westbrook Prison.

The Westbrook Youth Detention Centre, run by the government, was situated at Westbrook, 15 kilometres south west of Toowoomba. It was previously named the Westbrook Youth Centre. The institution was renamed the Westbrook Youth Detention Centre in 1993. It closed on 30 June 1994 and was transformed into the Darling Downs Correctional Centre.

A PRISON with a dark and violent past is set to be transformed into a place of peaceful learning and religious study.  The Darling Downs Correctional Centre was a place of hell for young boys where whippings, food and medical deprivation were common.  Boys were abused physically, sexually and emotionally.  Now a new chapter could be written for the former prison, with Buddhists planning to transform it into a school and place of worship.

6th Dec 2016.  A PLAN by a Buddhist group in Toowoomba to transform a former prison in Westbrook has gained the support of council planning officers.  Pureland College Association, a group founded by Venerable Master Chin Kung, wants to change the former Queensland Government correctional facility at 48 Althaus Rd into an educational establishment, place of worship and childcare centre.  The proposal includes refurbishing the former correctional centre which has a gross floor area of 9392sq…
