Mary Anning (1799-1847), searching for fossils along the coastal cliffs at Lyme Regis in Dorset. Uneducated and impoverished, she nonetheless discovered the first ichthyosaur and plesiosaur skeletons as a child. The tongue twister "She sells sea shells (fossils) by the sea shore" refers to Mary. Her discoveries came as curios for aristocrats and attracted patrons at a time when fossil collecting was trendy.
Lyme Regis, The Old Fossil Shop c.1891. The remarkable Miss Mary Anning brought fame to Lyme when she discovered an ichthyosaur near Charmouth in 1811. Fossil hunting remains a lucrative industry here to this day. This fossil shop, the first such outlet in the town, was demolished when the road was widened in 1913.
