Portrait of Ingeborg Zotz I met the painter Ingeborg at the opening of her exhibition, there were a lot of people there and talking with Ingeborg was very limited. I wanted to make a portrait of her, I asked the director of the gallery if she could approach Ingeborg for me about making her portrait. Ingeborg agreed and we spent a few hours trying different things, this photo is Ingeborg’s favourite from that meeting. It was shot while from outside of the screen door into her studio.

James. For this photo I used my usual two light setup, key to the side to shape the face and a fill light which was a large softbox just positioned just behind the camera. The difference here was that I added an orange gel to the keylight which was a bare speed light and placed it just out of camera view. I also had to carefully flag the key light to prevent it's light hitting anything behind the desk lamp so as to create the effect that the lamp was the source.

Portrait of Peter. This is a three light setup, two lights on Peter and of course the sun, I always count natural light as a source when it's being used in the shot in some way, in this case for the background and as a fill on Learn about portraiture and lighting "The art of the portrait" workshop will be running May and June. Portrait of Neo. Two light setup on location, plus of small amount of available light to show the background. The lights were set to high power to overcome any available light falling on the subject so that I could get the subject to really stand from their environment. This photo was made on the fly by approaching office workers who were smoking in the street, I only had enough time to approach them, stage and light them in the time it took for the cigarette to burn down.

Portrait of Greg Greg Martin asked me to take a portrait of his family in the family home, we were greeted by his collection of tribal masks that he and his wife collected in their travels. In some ways this portrait is a type of family portrait as well, not one of blood ties, but of stories. #Bust #Face #Head Shot #Likeness #People #Person #Portrait #Portraiture #Portrayal #Profile #tribalart
