A traditional grain storage structure in Malawi, known as a nkhokwe, whose porous structure lets pests in to damage the maize stored inside. “Before the introduction of silos, we were using sacks and nkhokwe, but we were not able to save much. Now, we can say that our lives have changed,” says Andrew Kasalika, chairman of a farmer's club in Kachilika Village of northern Malawi. A Meriam domed house, this being a particularly large example with a central post rather than a free-spanning dome structure. Due to the horticultural economy of the eastern Torres Strait Islands, the lifestyle was quite sedentary and much energy was expended on the construction of these houses. The interior sometimes contained tiered sleeping platforms and storage racks, with a fireplace next to the door. (Memmott)
