Lynchburg Then and Now - N&W Tunnel in 1982 and 2011
In the top photograph shot by Garland Harper on May 30, 1982, the last train ever passes through the N&W Tunnel under Hollins Mill Road. Thirty years later, the tunnel is part of the Blackwater Creek Bikeway. Cut in 1851-52 through 508 ft. of solid rock, the curved tunnel was integral in connecting Lynchburg by rail to the New River in southwestern Virginia.
