Betye Saar (born July 30, 1926, Los Angeles) is a contemporary artist best known for her 1972 boxed assemblage "The Liberation of Aunt Jemina". She began her career in design but moved to mixed-media work in the 1960's, collecting images of African American stereotypes and later moving into memorabilia reflecting her black, Native American, and Irish ancestry. Saar has taught at UCLA and the Otis Art Institute. #TodayInBlackHistory
