Lucy Burns was an American suffragist. After protesting in D.C., she was arrested and sent to a workhouse. To break their spirits, the jailers began what has become known as the "Night of Terror." Lucy Burns was beaten and handcuffed to her cell door with her hands above her head and left that way for the entire night. Of all the American Suffragists, Lucy Burns spent the most time in jail. Here's to our right to vote!

pp  They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917,  when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards  to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

Dora Lewis, on the infamous “Night of Terror” at Occoquan Workhouse, was hurled bodily into her cell. She was knocked unconscious and feared dead when she collided headfirst against her iron bed frame.
