Petoskey isn't the only stone on the beach, and the Lake Michigan shoreline from South Haven to St. Joseph offers wonderful stones for rock collectors. Petoskey Stones are the fossilized remains of a coral that grew in Michigan 350 million years ago. Petoskey means "rays of rising sun" in Indian. Oh gosh I saw so many of these when I lived Up North Michigan
