This beautiful Spanish map depicts the principal regions of Europe in play during the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) in which the Netherlands rebelled against the Spanish Hapsburg rule ultimately forming the independent Dutch Republic. An interesting touch is an illustration of burning fleet at the top of the map in the North Sea. Could be a reference to the Spanish Armada which was destroyed in 1588 in an unrelated action against the English during the same period.

1572 - Conquests by the "Geuzen" and the House of Orange. The Geuzen (the Beggars) was a name assumed by the confederacy of Calvinist Dutch nobles, who from 1566 opposed Spanish rule in the Netherlands. The most successful group of them operated at sea, and so were called Watergeuzen. The Capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen in 1572 provided the first foothold on land for the rebels, who would conquer the northern Netherlands and establish an independent Dutch Republic.

The Dutch lion is one of the symbols we use since the middle ages. It was for example on coats of arms. Nowadays we still use the lion. It's in the logo of the government, but also on the team shirts of the national football team.

The dutch lion: Lions are a constant in the heraldic symbology of the Netherlands, so much so that maps of the Netherlands in the past have been shaped as lions with a common nickname "Leo Belgicus".

This is a photo of the Dutch Republic domain in Amsterdam around the 17th century. The Dutch Republic was a main powerhouse of 17th century Europe and controlled most commerce. By 1600, it had become the financial and commercial hub of Northern Europe. This is very interesting to me because I am extremely interested in studying commerce as a career and hope to study from the Dutch Republic in future business.
