First built in the castle became a royal palace for Edward I and Eleanor of Castile in who added the successive gatehouse defences of the barbican. It was later transformed by Henry VIII for Catherine of Aragon.

Built by the order of King Henry VIII it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles.

While not the biggest or grandest Great Hall, Stokesay Castle's Great Hall is my favourite, and if ever I could have a great hall, this would be it.  It is one of the best preserved late 13th century great halls in the world.

Kenwood House - have cake and tea after a walk on Hampstead Heath. The Brew House Café is next to the house in what was once the service wing.
