The Laughing Owl (Sceloglaux albifacies), also known as Whēkau or the White-faced Owl, was an endemic owl found in New Zealand in 1840, but is now extinct. It was plentiful when European settlers arrived in New Zealand. The call of the Laughing Owl has been described as "a loud cry made up of a series of dismal shrieks frequently repeated". An unidentified bird was heard and giving "a most unusual weird cry which might almost be described as maniacal" in Fiordland, in February 1956

The Laughing Owl (Sceloglaux albifacies) is no longer laughing. It went extinct in a victim of human activities such as hunting (mainly for specimens), habitat destruction, and the introduction of non-native predators such as cats and stoats.

The recently extinct Haast's Eagle from New Zealand was the largest eagle in the world. The flightless bird the Haast Eagle is attacking is also extinct and indigenous to New Zealand, called the Moa and could grow as tall as 12 ft and weigh 200 kilograms. Skeletons for these birds are in Museums in Auckland and Wellington. Keva xo

Haast’s eagle was the largest eagle ever to have lived and the top predator of the time in its ecosystem.
