Evariste Galois ( 1811 - 1832 ) was a French mathematician. His work laid the foundations for "Galois Theory", a major branch of abstract algebra. He was the first to use the word "group" as a technical term in mathematics. A radical Republican during the monarchy of Louis Philippe in France, he died from wounds suffered in a duel under shadowy circumstances at the age of twenty.

I need all my courage to die at twenty! Who: Mathematician Evariste Galois Notes: Spoken to his brother Alfred after being fatally wounded in a duel.

Galois Theory by Emil Artin In the nineteenth century, French mathematician Evariste Galois developed the Galois theory of groups-one of the most penetrating concepts in modem mathematics. The elements of the theory are clearly presented in this second, revised edition of a volume of lectures delivered by noted mathematician Emil Artin. The book has been edited by Dr. Arthur N. Milgram, who has also supplemented the work with a Section on Applications. The first...

Elements of Abstract Algebra by Allan Clark This concise, readable, college-level text treats basic abstract algebra in remarkable depth and detail. An antidote to the usual surveys of structure, the book presents group theory, Galois theory, and classical ideal theory in a framework emphasizing proof of important theorems.Chapter I (Set Theory) covers the basics of sets. Chapter II (Group Theory) is a rigorous introduction to groups. It contains all the results...
