Akbash Maremma Dog / Turkish Shepherd / Akbaş Çoban Köpeği / Akbas Coban Kopegi Excellent, loyal guard dog, although training is necessary. Wary of strangers.

Akbash...This is an intelligent, courageous and loyal dog, completely dedicated and devoted to its owner and any livestock in its charge. Independent with strong protective instincts. Is a natural guardian that even at a very young age will bond strongly with the livestock it is protecting. It has such strong maternal instincts that sheep will often allow this dog to sniff and clean their newborn lambs and will flock behind their guardian when threatened. They are naturally dog aggressive.

A Maremma pup (c) L Van Bommel ~ used in Australia as "guardian dogs", who protect livestock from wild animals. The article says that although Maremma dogs (the breed mainly used as guardian dogs) may look fluffy and friendly, they are, in fact, an aggressive breed and don't make particularly good family pets (shame!). Interesting info and (v cute!) photos at the BBC, here ~ http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/17757386#
