The fourteenth amendment to the US Constitution was approved on July 9, 1868 amid the Reconstruction period. It, alongside the thirteenth and fifteenth revisions are by and large known as the Reconstruction changes. There was a worry that with the expansion of representation in Southern states once the three-fifths trade off was no more in actuality would make Southern states all the more capable.

The amendment prevented former slaves from having their rights taken away from them. It also made all of the former slaves and their children citizens of the country.
