(Summary from Grave Secrets) 4294 Sergeant Ernest Edward Payne, 1st Pioneer Battalion, of Kialla, Victoria. Enlisting on 31 July 1915, Payne saw service in France, being Mentioned in Despatches before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving on 25 January 1919. Sergeant Payne passed away on 23 April 1974 and is buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

Boer War veteran and holder of the Queen's South Africa Medal, Carey enlisted in D Coy, 5th Infantry Battalion on 17th August 1914, landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Saw action in France and Flanders including Sailly, Pozieres, Ypres and the Somme. Returned to Australia 4th October 1918.
