Monte Carlo Rally
For the first Rally in 1911, 23 cars set out from 11 points in Europe and results were determined from passenger comfort, elegance of the car and its condition on arrival. By the 1950s, some 300 cars travelled from four points over 2,000 miles to Southern France at an average speed of 50 kmh. The leading cars then took part in a time trial around the Monaco grand prix course and navigation and breaking tests over the Col de Turini. The rally now takes place in the French Riviera.
