5th Marquess of Bute, John Crichton-Stuart (1907-1956) The 5th Marquess was an authority on ornithology and travelled extensively to study birds in their natural habitats. Indeed, his interest in avian life was so great that he bought the island group of St. Kilda in 1931, to protect this important breeding ground for seabirds. He bequeathed the islands to the National Trust for Scotland upon his death in 1956, and it is due to this generous act that the site is open to the public today. A St Kilda islander launches a “mail boat”. "Mail boats" were used by the St Kilda islanders to send mail to the mainland. St Kilda was never served by a regular mail service which meant the islanders could not communicate with the mainland during the winter months when boats did not visit the island. "Mail boats", made from available materials such as tin cans and sheep's bladders, were carried by the Gulf Stream currents. They often landed in Northern Scotland or Norway. Scotch Image, Portraits
