Quokkas Are The Happiest Animals In The World
You might not have heard of the quokka before, but there's a good chance you've seen pictures of them floating around the internet. They're distinctive because of their cheeky little grins, and it's no surprise that they're often referred to as the happiest animals in the world.

Escaping to Rottnest Island.
As you know from my previous posts about Rottnest Island (here and here), it's one of my favourite places in the world. A true paradise island off the west coast of Australia, Rotto is home to, and named after, the world's happiest animal, the Quokka (original Dutch settlers thought they were rats, so called it ratsnest/rottnest), as well as being home to dozens of beautiful beaches and amazing snorkelling. My family arrived in Perth a week after me, and they're staying on longer, so we only…

Vasse Felix Filius Chardonnay
I have been a fan of Vasse Felix chardonnay for a long time now, so when I saw the Filius range sitting in the refrigerator at my local bottle shop - I was always going to make the sale. I was disappointed, yes, I am aware this was in a cheaper price range with filius apparently translating to son of their premier brands. Based on a fruit driven style, the Filius chardonnay still has oak but it is much more subdued than their premier or icon brands. The wine has a pale straw appearance with…
Vasse Felix Classic Dry White
What I liked about the naming of some Western Australian wines is their understated style. The Classic Dry White from Vasse Felix is a great example of a great drinking now style - no need to cellar. The Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is a summer blend with a basic 60/40 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc that is light straw in colour, this light style is great value drink is priced slightly under $20 per bottle. The zesty citrus and passionfruit flavours are layered over an initial dryness tapering off…
Masa Takashima - an entrepreneur of his time
I first came into contact with Masa Takashima not that long after completing my instructor examination, I had done some courses already so wasn't far off my Master Scuba Diver Trainer certification. Masa was a Japanese fellow who had lived in Perth a fair amount of time, he came to Australia from Japan, loved the place and decided to move here permanently. He had worked for a fairly high profile dive operation in Fremantle before deciding to branch out on his own - an astute decision in my…
Enemy of the state
Clive Palmer is an enemy of the state, that is the state of Western Australia. We are Covid-19 free in Western Australia, we have achieved eradication and all it takes is one person to end all the hard won gains. We are currently living in a bubble, an island within an island. With state borders closed, all the infections of the east coast cannot get in and wreck the economy of Western Australia, overwhelm the hospital system, make people sick and ultimately take lives. Clive Palmer is a…
2010 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon
Knocking the top off a 2010 Vasse Felix cabernet sauvignon, I knew I was in for a good evening. The Vasse Felix cabernet sauvignon has legs, so a 2010 is an aged wine that has softened out somewhat and has plenty left, a further six to eight years is reasonable although the tasing notes listed up to 2021. Winemaker Virginia Willcock has certainly developed a reputation for quality, this an excellent example of Vasse Felix Margaret River winemaking. As the opaque dark crimson wine flowed from…
A 2015 Upper Reach Tempranillo
Staying home on a Saturday night, I decided to crack the top on a 2015 Upper Reach Tempranillo and I was pretty happy I did. These days you can't pop a cork, but you can certainly crack a screw top. I am a pretty big fan of Upper Reach so I'm pretty confident bringing a bottle home from their Swan Valley winery. Not that it is an issue as cellar door sales includes tasting so you already know what you are getting. Checking the Upper Reach tasting notes, they tell us this has perfumed notes…
