Since the end of 2011 I have turned to the world of Ancient Rome, especially the military, to focus upon in my paintings and drawings. Ancient Rome is a subject that has held my fascination since I was nine years old.
"His Divine Madness", oil on canvas, 2013, 60 x 125cm. The landscape here is based on a photo of a region in the eastern desert of Egypt. The central figure is copied from a 19th century painting by Edwin Blashfield titled "The Emperor Commodus leaving the Arena at the head of his Gladiators". This figure is Commodus. The bust on the right is of the dictator, general and politician Lucius Cornelius Sulla. www.jeremyelkington.weebly.com
