There is a reoccurring motif in “The house on Mango Street” with women in windows. Esperanza's great grandmother sat in a window her entire life, trapped. Similar to women like Mamacita, Rafaela, Minerva, and Sally in the neighborhood who are trapped by their fathers, husbands, and children. Suffering emotionally and physically; they look out the window down the road all day. Looking down the road symbolizes hope, hope that they can escape Mango Street and the stigma carried with it. Her writing takes readers from the barrios of Mexico to the streets of Chicago, and always merges the personal with the political in a really powerful way.
