23. of #Blogfor30: How to limit the time you spend on Facebook

One of the downsides of social media is the sheer time it can take up. You decide to upload a Facebook status update. However, someone else’s status and subsequent conversation hooks you in. This leads you to someone else’s page. And so on. Before you know it, an hour of your day has been lost – and you haven’t even uploaded your own status yet. Here are two tips to help better manage your time on Facebook: Scheduled Posts I’ve written before about how to schedule Facebook posts direct to…

What I learnt from #Blogfor30

My poor little fingers were near worn out after 30 days of continuous blogging during September. As I’ve mentioned before, blogging every day is not new to me. I did it for a year or more when starting my personal blog and wrote between six and 10 stories a day as a journalist. The writing is the easy bit. The challenge is balancing it with parenting, writing a book, maintaining two blogs and running a business. But it’s achievable and you can gain a lot from it. Here’s what it gave me: It…

30. of #Blogfor30: The elements of Twitter and how to tweet

We've set up a Twitter account, uploaded a Twitter header image and learnt how to make Twitter easier to manage. Now to actually learn the elements of Twitter and how to tweet. Here's a basic guide: Start following other tweeps. Google people you know (for example, ``Kellie O'Brien Twitter''). Then start following people they’re following. Look also to blogs you follow and click through their social media icons. Tweavesdrop for a while, then jump in to conversations. Twitter is the one place…

29. of #Blogfor30: How to make Twitter easier

The Twitter homepage can be rather confusing and overwhelming. It can also be difficult to track various sections of Twitter. However, there is an easier way to do it. I’ve used Hootsuite, Bufferapp and TweetDeck to better manage Twitter. I got rid of TweetDeck, due to having to download it to my computer and continually having to click 'update'. Now, I use a combination of Bufferapp for scheduling and analytics, and Hootsuite for managing. In this post, I want to focus on Hootsuite. Please…

27. of #Blogfor30: How to install a Twitter header image

If you’ve already added a Facebook timeline cover or Google+ cover, you’ll find the process for installing a Twitter header image relatively easy. Twitter has just updated the sizing for its header since initially writing this post in 2012. Now, in June 2014, the dimensions are now much larger. Here's how to do it: Create a header image that is 1500 x 421 px (despite Twitter recommending 1500 x 500px). Log into Twitter, go to your Twitter profile and click on 'Edit Profile'. Click on…

26. of #Blogfor30: How to set up a Twitter account for your business or blog

For some long-time readers, you'll think a post about setting up a Twitter account is too basic. However, there are still plenty of people out there (based on the comments I receive) that have yet to dip their toe into Twittersphere. Many still believe Twitter is social nonsense, thanks in part to the reputation Shane Warne and Ashton Kutcher have given it via the media over the years. However, if you’re in business there is some real value in embracing Twitter. It can open the door to you…

25. of #Blogfor30: Social media crisis management – do you have a plan?

I’ve been listening to the Great By Choice audio book by Jim Collins in the car. The message that keeps hitting home to me is that the most successful people in life and business are those who have a plan – and a plan if things go wrong or change. It’s about being proactive, rather than reactive. So, what does any of this have to do with social media? A lot. What would happen if someone posted a negative comment about your business on your Facebook status? I asked this question at the Mum…

24. of #Blogfor30: Do your social media followers know you care?

Social media is part work, part pleasure for me. I enjoy interacting with others, learning about new bloggers and businesses via others and the education, entertainment and inspiration that comes from the content. However, there’s one thing that’s been irking me a little of late. After I interact with someone’s Facebook post or tweet, I get nothing in reply. Silence. It’s pretty clear that many simply post and run, with little care of the aftermath of their status update. However, when…

19. of #Blogfor30: What is Facebook’s Offers feature?

What on earth are Facebook offers? And does anyone use them? When they were first rolled out in 2012, it seemed everyone was diving in to try them. Since, I barely see them. Or maybe I'm just not following the pages the coupons are targeting. Never heard of them. Well, here is a brief answer that shed a little more light on what Facebook's Offers feature is: If you have at least 50 people liking your Page, you can create an offer from the ads create tool to promote an offer or service. So…

17. of #Blogfor30: Why should you care about Facebook’s algorithm?

I’m not going to get into the technical side of Facebook’s algorithm, because we’ll all likely have a brain strain. And, to be honest, it changes so constantly who could keep up! However, there are some basic things you should know about it. With Facebook, you need to forget about the number of likers and learn to value engagement. Sure, you need to have ``someone’’ to talk to on Facebook, but don’t dwell on those numbers too much. It’s more important to have 200 fans who are genuinely…

15. of #Blogfor30: 5 steps to adding cover images to your Facebook page tabs

As you learnt yesterday, Facebook page tabs have moved. With the June 2014 changes, adding cover images to your Facebook page tabs is still quite easy and looks more effective than the default image option. The aim, after all, is to entice people to click on them to learn more about your business, sign up to your email list, buy your services or products and connect with your other social channels. Here are five easy steps to adding cover images to Facebook page tabs: Step 1: Create an…

14. of #Blogfor30: How to create Facebook Tabs Part 2

If you're a little confused about the title of this post, it's part of a 30 day blog challenge I did a couple of years ago. I'm presently in the process of updating those posts and resharing them during June. You can find them all on my Pinterest board. However, it appears Day 14 has vanished from my blog, never to be seen again. Along with a few other days. So I thought this was a timely opportunity to share a post about one of the third party apps I use to create my Facebook tabs. In the…
