Reporting to Parents using the EYLF

It's nearing the end of term 3 here in Western Australia so our thoughts are turning to updating our portfolios with this term's work. Over the years we have modified our portfolio to make it less time consuming to put together and more informative for parents. We use an A3 plastic sleeve display book to put the children's work in. It has a pocket on the cover so that we can include a page there. We put a picture of the child on the cover. This helps to identify which child the portfolio…

Assessment using the Early Years Learning Framework

One of the difficult aspects of assessing young children is the copious amounts of written observational notes. I'm striving to make a system that makes this easier. I've toyed with the idea of using my HP Elitebook 2760p to take notes on. On the plus side it has a stylus so you can handwrite notes and Windows 7 allows handwriting to text which eliminates the need to retype the notes. The Elitebook is fairly lightweight also but still a bit cumbersome to be carrying around and not very…

EYLF Programming II

On Wednesday I had a day away from the class to attend a Professional Development run by Jo Harris (CEO RE Early Childhood Co-ordinator) and Sister Christine. The main focus of the RE in the Early Years- Kindy PD was planning so we spent time looking at the Early Years Learning Framework and looking at different planning formats. We also looked at a number of religious education resources, how to incorporate RE into your programming, how RE fits in with the EYLF and the elements necessary in…

Programming using the EYLF

I've been trying to get my head around a programming format that suits my needs for years now. At the beginning of the year I spend hours revamping the format and generally participating in work avoidance techniques rather than actually filling in the probably "just fine as it is" programme. This year is the first year that I am reasonably happy with the outcome. I've been trying to get my head around the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and integrating that into how I programme. I read…

Collecting Information

At the beginning of a school year we're greeted with a class full of new faces, most of whom we know little about. This is my 14th year at my current school so there are some children that I have met previously, as siblings of children I have taught before, and so I do know a little more about them. We recently asked the parents to fill in a form with some background information on their child including medical information (This is a copy of the form given to me for my child who is also in…
