My great-grandmother, Emma Minnie Boyd, painted countless beautiful watercolour pictures of the Australian bush. She also painted a frieze of the four seasons which was mounted on the walls of her house in Yarra Glen in Victoria. Sadly, the house was burned to the ground in the bushfires of 2009.
My goddaughter, Sabrina (on the right), and her friend Georgie. The girls came and stayed with me while I was writer-in-residence at Bundanon in NSW while I was writing the novel. Some of their stories wove their way into the book. The girls are walking down through the fields to swim in the river.
Many of my aunts and great-aunts provided inspiration for the character of Big. This landscape painting is by my aunt Yvonne Boyd who was always kind and generous to me whenever I went to I stay with her. The Four Seasons of Lucy McKenzie is dedicated to her daughter, my cousin Lucy.
