We thought it would be great to showcase the ongoing work we do with the weavers of Elcho Island by having them weave their traditional materials onto a wire version of Koskela's Hoodie.

We also wanted to take the Koskela Hoodie to its upper limits by using the finest of finishes – copper leg connectors, timber desk, and beautiful nubuck leather for the hood.

The Hoodie frame was welded, then patient Koskela staff flew up to Darwin with the frame as checked luggage, where a smaller plane then took it to the island. The women got all hands to contribute to weaving the large frame. Amazingly the two mother-daughter teams were able to complete this huge project in a few weeks. Finished just in time, it was again hand carried from Darwin-Sydney-Milan. So incredible!

Koskela came to us with the idea of doing our weaving on lampshades. I was interested in this new idea.” said Mavis Warrngilna Ganambarr a senior weaver from Elcho Island. “I thought it would be interesting to take our traditional Yolngu materials and use them on Balanda objects. We all thought this would be a good way to show a new audience what can be done by Yolngu artists with materials from the bush.” - Shop these products with Koskela

Stories about Koskela's Collaboration with Indigenous Weavers: “We took Sasha and Russel into the bush and said ‘let’s go shopping’, and they said, ’where are the shops?’. This made us laugh because for us the bush is our art materials shop, it is where we get all our materials from to do our artwork, it is all around us and it is free.” Read more at koskela.com.au

Talented illustrator, James Gulliver Hancock, collaborated with us for our Hoodie for Milan. He also sketched up a great banner that sat behind the desk.

We developed a timber version of the Hoodie and asked James to illustrate the exterior. We loved that the illustration included his great subtle references to life in Australia.
