New Boy - Tracy Chevalier - a literary YA novel. A powerful retelling of Othello, successfully transposed to the world of the 6th class playground. The adult knowingness of the child characters would normally have me gagging but, in this case, I was completely convinced of these beautifully nuanced, perfectly drawn pre-teens and the spiral of events that envelops them to create a gripping psychological drama. 5 stars.

One of our most successful historical novelists transplants the tragedy of Othello to a playground in Washington D. : when a young black boy arrives at an all-white school, he finds himself at the centre of a web of jealousy, bullying and revenge.

The Zookeeper's Wife - Diane Ackerman - a book released as a film in 2017. A very touching portrait of a woman in intensely difficult times. Interesting for many reasons, not least the spotlight on Nazi philosophy regarding animals. Well written, suspenseful in the final third. 4 stars.

The Boy on the Wooden Box - Leon Leyson - a book set during wartime. Leyson was one of the youngest Jews of Oscar Schindler's famous 'list'. Leyson's story of survival is both remarkable and immediate, the best holocaust story written for kids I've yet encountered. 5 stars.

The Martian - Andy Weir - a book with a reputation as a page turner. Mediocre writing and characterisation, great story (so, yes, a page turner it was). Sometimes the science was fascinating, at other times just tedious. 3 stars.

The Shallows: How the internet is changing the way we think, read and remember by [Carr, Nicholas] - a book discovered on a blog or Pinterest. A very interesting, worthwhile read but I'd love an updated version with more recent stats and analysis on the effects of the changing digital world on our brains. 4 stars.
