One of the most common questions I get is "what's that on the whale's chin/is it injured?" Humpback whales carry a variety of free-loading parasites, including barnacles and lice. An adult Humpback can carry nearly half a tonne of barnacles! The barnacles prefer areas of the body where water flow is constant, hence why so many whales sport the barnacles on their chin. This guy has a very prominent case of barnacles and lice!
