Gallipoli - World War I is one of the most painful periods in Australian history. The campaign was the first major battle undertaken by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in both of these countries. Anzac Day, 25 April, remains the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans in Australia and New Zealand, surpassing Armistice Day/Remembrance Day.

John "Jack" Simpson Kirkpatrick (centre), was a stretcher bearer with the Australian & New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during the Gallipoli Campaign. After landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, he obtained a donkey and began carrying wounded soldiers from the frontline to the beach, for evacuation. He did this for three & a half weeks, often under fire, until he was killed. Simpson & his Donkey are a key part of the "Anzac legend". http://www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/simpson.asp
