Eucalyptus tetraptera - Four-winged Mallee

The left flower has JUST shed its large brown pyamidal bud cap, revealing stamens still unfurled. The right-hand flower is a bit older, giving the stamens time to catch up with the stigma in the center of the "pink donut". This plant really never makes a tree, mostly just a messy straggle of branches in a big pile - with these stunning flowers. Cal Poly Campus, San Luis Obispo, CA 8Sept14 BushPhoto Myrtaceae

Apart from the large flowers one of the other main feature of this tree is the flower buds which occur in clusters of seven and take on a red colour just before flowering. The bottom section of the cap is ribbed and has a beak like extension. Buds are very distinctive and unlike any other Eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus erythrocorys

Illyarrie (Eucalyptus erythrocorys): an excellent small eucalypt for gardens, this Western Australian native has large scarlet caps and bright yellow bird-attracting flowers in summer and autumn. Its strappy bright green leaves contrast beautifully with the greyish-white bark. Quick-growing to six or eight metres, it responds well to heavy pruning. It requires full sun (Josh Byrne).
