Artist,naturalist, explorer and all round intrepid Aussie woman, Ellis Rowan 1888 (photo pass) received a gold medal at the Centennial International Exhibition in Melbourne. She was a sensation, not only for the quality of her art, but for causing great upset to several of her male contemporaries who failed to win medals.
