A passionate amateur looks at Melbourne history

Port Phillip Club Hotel, 232 Flinders Street. Originally a 26-room house built in 1838, it was rented by the Port Phillip Club as an alternative to the Melbourne Club. Later, it was a boarding house for young women and in 1850 it became the Port Phillip Club Hotel. The hotel was demolished in 1960 and replaced with the Port Phillip arcade.

On this day in 1837 ( March 3 ) a new township was surveyed and named as Melbourne, in honour of the British Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. We are rather proud how it turned out.
