Ned Kelly’s death mask was created immediately after the execution by Maximilian Kreitmayer, the proprietor of Bourke Street waxworks after the head was shaved and oiled. His headless body was buried in an unmarked grave on the grounds of the Old Melbourne Gaol. The remains were later removed to the Pentridge Prison cemetery in the 1920s before they were dug up again in 2011.
