Juggling With Kids: Around the World in 12 Dishes: Japan: Tanabata

Tanabata is a Japanese Star Festival based on a romantic story about the stars Altair & Vega. Every year Japanese celebrate this story by writing their wishes on paper and hanging them on a bamboo tree in hopes that their wishes will come true.

12 yr old Sadako Sasaki was the star of her schools running team when the dizzy spells started. Soon she is gravely ill with leukaemia, an after-effect of the atom bomb that fell on her city when she was two years old. Recalling a Japanese legend, Sadako set to work folding paper cranes. For the legend holds that if a sick person folds on thousand cranes, the gods will grand her wish and make her healthy again.
