TOMMY Berry was a two-time Group 1 winner at Randwick yesterday, but both achievements were put in the shade when he won the final event of The Championships on Cosmic Endeavour. The win put Berry on level terms with fellow young gun James McDonald, also a dual Group 1 winner yesterday, as the pair tied for the inaugural Nathan Berry Medal. The award was created to pay tribute to Berry’s twin brother Nathan, who died from the rare epilepsy-related condition Norse syndrome earlier this month.

Tommy Berry, twin brother of Nathan Berry, in the mounting yard after his ride on The Great Snowman in Race 9. Tommy said Nathan would have wanted him to ride at the meeting. "I have to live Nathan's dreams as well as mine," he told the Daily Telegraph. "I've got to try to look on the bright side and riding is what Nathan would want me to do. "He fought that hard for us for two weeks in the (Singapore) hospital. Nathan was so strong for us so we have to be strong for him."

IT was Nathan Berrys favourite day on the racing calendar, and the talented jockey should have been there.

Friends and family reflect during a one minute’s silence requested by Tommy. The grief and sorrow was overwhelming for many. The group, all wearing blue, huddled by the track, some sobbing, others only just holding it together. And in those moments the racing industry, so often divided, was well and truly a family.
