KNOW YOUR FARMER - Bauer's Organic Farm
Have you ever ventured into Queensland’s Lockyer Valley? Nestled at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, only 60 minutes from Brisbane, is this stunning agricultural region affectionately known as Australia’s Salad Bowl. The Lockyer Valley is listed in the Top Ten Most Fertile Farming Areas in the World. And, right in the heart of this rich, fertile valley lies Bauer’s Organic Farm, Queensland’s largest producer of certified organic vegetables.
BIODYNAMIC vs ORGANIC
I was talking to a friend the other day about a seminar I recently attended on biodynamic gardening. ‘Biodynamics!?’ he exclaimed. “Isn’t that all about burying cow horns and planting lettuce at midnight under the full moon!?”. Hmmm - yes and no (mostly no!). It seems that despite the marked increase in popularity of bio-dynamically grown food in Australia in recent years, it is still, somewhat, misunderstood.
CARROTS ARE EASY TO TAKE FOR GRANTED!
At the end of a long week when the fridge and cupboards are bare you can pretty much guarantee that there is a carrot or two loitering in the bottom of the veggie crisper, waiting to freshen up a meal. So, when Australian carrot supplies were affected by unseasonal weather earlier this year, everyone was a little unnerved. Luckily, carrot crops are booming again, so fresh salads, juices, soups and cake (yes, cake!!) loaded with these delicious root vegetables are back on the menu!
THE DIRT ON SPUDS
Do you know anyone who doesn’t like potatoes? No? Me either. What’s not to love!? Creamy, buttery mash, melt-in-your-mouth potato bake, crunchy chips and hot, steamy baked jacket potatoes. Yum! Luckily, potatoes are nutritional powerhouses so the potato lovers among us (ie. everyone) don’t have to feel guilty about eating loads of them! They are packed full of vitamin C, vitamin B6, Niacin, Folate, Manganese, Iron and potassium and are high in carbohydrates and fibre to keep everything…
ORGANIC CERTIFICATION 101
What do think of when you see the word ‘ORGANIC’ on a product label? Does it conjure up images of spray-free farming, chickens roaming in lush pastures and muddy farmers boots? No? Just me then! We all have a different idea of what ‘organic’ means, so how can we be sure that the organic products we buy have been produced using best-practice organic methods?

WHY CHOOSE ORGANIC?

Isn’t it lovely to walk into the grocery store and see colourful rows of fresh, glossy capsicums lined up like nature’s little traffic lights? Capsicums don’t last long in my kitchen. The juicy, sweet red ones are perfect in salads, orange ones are made for stuffing and roasting, and green capsicum is delicious in fresh salsa.
AUSTRALIAN ORGANIC AWARENESS MONTH 2016
There’s nothing like the beginning of spring to make you appreciate the natural world around you. The flush of flowers and new growth is exploding out of every plant. Air filled with busy, buzzing bees and birdsong. The skies are clear, the breeze is warm, and everything is bursting with life.
GMO? GM NO!!
Technology is a wonderful thing and has so many applications to create a connected, abundant, resilient global community. And let's not forget the hours or procrastination watching angry cat videos! However, when technology blends with science to completely override natural processes, it raises lots of ethical concerns. Such is the case with Genetically Modified Organisms. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a…
THE BITTER THE BETTER
Winter time is glorious. Open fires, snuggly doonas, hot soups and warm cups of tea. Then the dreaded flu hits the family, and all the winter charm is lost in a pile of tissues and croaky sore throats.
THE HUMBLE MUSHROOM
Mushrooms are the all round ‘Mr Nice Guy’ of the vegetable family. They will happily take centre stage as the star of a dish but will also humbly accept a backstage role as an extra ingredient. Wherever, and however they end up on your plate; the important thing is that they make it there in the first place. Because mushrooms are packed full of nutritional goodness!!
TO PEEL OR NOT TO PEEL...
To peel or not to peel, that is the question. Kiwifruits are divisive in my family. There are the ‘eat the whole thing, fuzzy skin and all’ people (ie. me), and then there are the ‘cut in half and scoop out the flesh, leaving the best bit for the compost’ people (ie. everyone else).

THINK BEFORE YOU EAT.
At a time when our lifestyles are busier than ever, and trendy diets lurk around every corner, choosing healthy food for you and your family has become an overwhelming task. To add to the confusion, we can no longer define ‘healthy food’ by its nutritional quality alone.
