Kolmanskop- 'The Sands of Time': Incredible photos from an African Ghost Town

A beautiful collection of photos capturing a century-old abandoned town being swallowed by the sands in the African desert.

You wouldn't guess by looking at it now, but the town of Kolmanskop was once the spot of diamond mining and extravagance in 1908. But once the fair-weather inhabitants discovered more diamonds south of Kolmanskop, the site instantly became a ghost town. It is now famous for its eerie, sand-filled houses, which have appeared on screen several times, notably Dust Devil (1993) and The King Is Alive (2000).

PHOTOS: Creepy Deserted Town Is Unlike Anything You've Seen

Urban decay - Kolmanskop is a ghost town in southern Namibia. Once a German mining town, it is now being reclaimed by the desert sands.

Kolmanskop is a ghost town in the Namib desert in southern Namibia, a few kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz. It was named after a transport driver named Johnny Coleman who, during a sand storm, abandoned his ox wagon on a small incline opposite the settlement. Once a small but very rich mining village, it is now a popular tourist destination run by the joint firm NamDeb.
