VIKTOR UND VIKTORIA (Germany, 1933, UFA, directed by Reinhold Schunzel). If the title looks familiar it's because Julie Andrews starred in a wonderful 1982 remake (one of my favorite films). Also excellent is the 1935 British remake with Jessie Matthews. This original version starring Renate Muller is just as great; infused with the last gasp of freewheeling Weimar decadence before the Nazi deluge. Appearance/reality, sexual identity and desire drive this musical comedy classic. (KevinR@Ky)

Renate Muller in Viktor und Viktoria directed by Reinhold Schunzel. This early version of the film inspired at least four more versions, the most recent being the Blake Edwards–Julie Andrews film in 1982 - A Brief History of Women in Tuxes

NORTHWEST PASSAGE (1940, MGM; directed by King Vidor). Taken together and separately, the years 1939 and 1940 were Hollywood's greatest period, and this vigorous, exciting and gorgeous-looking adventure epic, which got MGM out into the great outdoors, was one reason why. Spencer Tracy was a strong lead and the film had the same camaraderie one saw in Erroll Flynn's Robin Hood film not long before. The first of a planned two-part saga, that, alas was not to be. Northwest Passage - Spencer Tracy should have won an Oscar for his riveting portrayal of Major Rogers. The photography is breathtaking as well.

Be Cool. John Travolta as Chili Palmer again (which I love!) but The Rock and Vince Vaughn are hilarious!
