St Dunstan in the East was originally built around 1100 and stood for quite some time before being damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was patched up in 1695, then partially rebuilt in 1817. In 1941 it suffered irreparable damage by German bombs. All that survived the attack was the Wren Tower and the north and south walls. Instead of rebuilding, it was transformed into a public garden. It opened in 1971 with grass and trees planted within the ruins and a fountain in the former…
