Explore The Road, Closer, and more!

Having lost one another early in their lives, separated after the death of their parents, they became closer after Jo lured my widowed mother to Scotland to live nearby. After Forneth estate was sold in the early 1960s, and her husband died in 1965, Jo moved into former estate cottages, consolidated into one: Downalong (as in, down along the road...) Jo and Gwen lived in one anothers' pockets thereafter. Here they are in Jo's living room, all dressed up for some social gathering. 1970s?

How hard it must have been for Jo to return to the claustrophobic atmosphere of the sisters spinsterly lives, ruled by the Victorian values of Church, chastity and obedience. Left to right, Maggie (one of triplets but the only one to survive), Lois (the eldest and ruler of the roost) and Bea (Beatrice).

Taking sisterly twinhood to extreme... Fashion-conscious Kathy Heffernan and Rosey Coles, 60, used to dress alike as teenagers but the habit ended when they got married and moved apart. For the last two years they have lived side-by-side in Aldershot, Hants., where they work together with their own joint cleaning business, and do absolutely everything together, dressed in matching clothes.

Jo was sent to live with her three maiden aunts, who lived at Dove Cottage, Hadley, Shropshire. The house was built by their father (Jo's grandfather and my great-grandfather), ironmaster Jonathon Price.

My mother on the left, Jo on the right. They are wearing dresses made for them by their mother Irene, who died of TB aged just 31. The sisters lost her, their father 18 months later, and then each other, as they were sent to live with relatives in different parts of the country.

In 1951, my aunt married and moved to Perthshire, Scotland. In the August, we went en famille for our first holiday on Forneth estate. Here (in matching outfits that nowadays make me cringe), I am walking with Bridget along the terrace of Forneth House. I was 10, she was 7. About the same ages as Jo and my mother in the very first photograph posted. But what a difference!
