Mother Ann Lee (29 February 1736 – 8 September 1784) was the leader of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, or Shakers.  In 1774 she and a small group of her followers emigrated from England to New York. They worshiped by ecstatic dancing or "shaking", which dubbed them as the Shaking Quakers, or Shakers. Ann Lee preached to the public and led the Shaker church at a time when few women did either.

Frieda Pushnik was born on 10 February 1923 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Although healthy, Frieda was born without arms or legs — caused, Frieda said, by a botched appendectomy performed on her mother. Despite her lack of limbs Frieda taught herself to perform many useful tasks, some of which would become part of her act. Pushnik spent six years with Ripley, but in 1943 Frieda joined the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus Sideshow, becoming a member of their 'Congress of Freaks'.

Guadalupe and Josefina Hinojosa were born in Havana, Cuba on November 25, 1912, to Diego Francisco Hinojosa and Maria de Jesus Alcala. Joined at the sternum and abdomen (xipho-omphalopagus), the sisters appeared as a sideshow attraction until a surgeon in San Antonio decided that he could separate the little girls. They underwent the surgery in 1917, at the age of five. Josefina, the larger, stronger twin, was given the shared liver. Without a liver, Guadalupe quickly died.
