Peltasts were named after the Thracian crescent-like wicker shield, called a pelte in Greek, or peltarion in Latin. The tribe in Thrace known as the Agrianoi employed the best peltasts around, and were recruited as mercenaries by Alexander the Great. The Greeks had to create new specialized, lightly armoured troops, called ekdromoi (singular ekdromos) that ran out of the phalanx and chased off the peltasts.
