A 71 year old Free state farmer was shot dead on Sunday morning. Dirk Steenkamp was a reputable businessman and a farmer. He went to investigate a water pump on his farm in the early hours and was attacked by suspects and shots were heard by his wife, who then phoned the police. Social media have claimed that it was an execution.
His immediate successor, the nationalist Vladimir Meciar, went further, doing a deal with the Czech prime minister to split the country without even consulting the public in a referendum. Opinion polls showed that 67 per cent of Slovaks and 78 per cent of Czechs were against the split, but it went ahead anyway from 1 January 1993.
