Laura Tong in Suite en blanc, The Australian Ballet, February 2014. Photograph by David Kelly. The Cigarette solo from Suite en blanc is so named because it’s set to music composed by Edouard Lalo for a long-lost ballet called Namouna. Not much is known about Namouna, which was about a slave girl and her two masters; but in one scene, she rolls a cigarette for her lover. In the hands of Serge Lifar, this becomes a stylish, sinuous moment for a female dancer.
