William Harvey Carney was born a slave in 1840. His father escaped and purchased freedom for Carney & his mother. Carney enlisted in the Union army in 1863, joining the all-black 54th Massachusetts Infantry.  On May 23rd, 1900, he became the first Black awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (the highest military honor). He was honored for his heroism at the Assault on Fort Wagner.

On May 1900 Sergeant William Harvey Carney became the first African American to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for his heroism on July 1863 in the Assault on Fort Wagner during the Civil War.

Medal of Honor (posthumously) for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 12 July 1965, near Danang, Republic of Vietnam.
