Mary Phagan’s bloodied and bludgeoned body was discovered by night watchman, Newt Lee. In the days following, Lee was a prime suspect in her death. Later, pencil factory janitor Jim Conley was taken in for questioning. Fueled by growing anti-Semitism, media coverage of the case became frenzied. When Frank went on trial in the summer, crowds camped out around the courthouse. They celebrated when the jury found Frank guilty (largely based on Jim Conley’s testimony).

From December 1871-1878 Oscar-Claude Monet (1840–1926) lived at Argenteuil, a village on the right bank of the Seine river near Paris, and a popular Sunday-outing destination for Parisians, where he painted some of his best-known works. In 1873, Monet purchased a small boat equipped to be used as a floating studio.
